I don’t know exactly how to quantify what I mean by “cinematic”. What I don’t mean is just dropping the term “production value”. It obviously helps, but I guess what I’m looking for is an undeniable melding of art, art direction, animation, sound, sound design, voice acting, music, writing, direction, etc.
Okay…how does that not exactly equal “production value”? You basically just said “make sure everything is excellent.” Yeah, I guess I did, but…
I don’t really know what I’m asking for, but **these are the series where every episode feels like a mini-movie**. Each episode has your undivided attention and time almost stands still while you’re watching it.
Some examples of series that feel “cinematic” to me:
* Re:Zero
* Attack on Titan
* Houseki no Kuni (Land of the Lustrous)
* Chainsaw Man
* Steins;Gate
I couldn’t help but cherrypick the 10s on my list, but all of these have had that *it* factor for me. I just get incredibly immersed.
That list is by no means exhaustive. I’ve purposely left plenty of amazing series out to avoid overloading this OP.
I’d like to exclude movies from this list since they generally have a higher budget, longer runtime, and more flexible production schedule.
I don’t even know if this post makes sense. I’m not a huge fan of using terms I don’t know or use often, but “series with a certain **je ne sais quoi**” might apply here.
P.S. Not looking just for the infamous cinematic “black bars”. But I’m sure it doesn’t hurt 😛
