Way too much importance is placed on MAL rankings

At a certain point the discourse around MAL rankings and ratings just become so tiring especially when there is a new number 1 ranked anime and then after a few days/weeks that anime is replaced by Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood at its usual spot.

The rankings are susceptible to both recency hype as well as protectionism from fandoms of established classics. It is a bit unreasonable to assume that an anime deserves to be called the greatest in all medium after just a single episode. It is also unreasonable that fanbases of established classics that are usually ranked at the top downvote the newcomers for fear of their anime losing the number one spot.

I think I’m general it would be better for MAL to implement a system where new anime can only be included in all time rankings on the basis of the score that they have a few weeks after they have finished their season. For continuous series it could be a few weeks after their 26th episode. By that point most of the hype would have died down from the passionate fanbase and the score will able to come down to a more reasonable amount.

Also in general any series with a score about 8.5 on MAL is usually great and would be something that you should check out. Like series like FMAB, Gintama Fruits Basket, Hunter x Hunter, Kaguya Sama, Attack on Titan, Steins Gate etc. are all amazing anime that you should definitely check out. There is no point in slinging shit on universally acclaimed anime like these just because the anime you like didn’t crack high spots on MAL or even reached number 1 on MAL and got displaced a few weeks later after the hype died down.
