Is Mushoku Tensei’s flaw really its portrayal of the main character’s actions, and not the main character itself?

Seen some people say it’s the portrayal that matters. I disagree. Rudy’s initial character backstory is already him being a creepy controversial 30-something hikkikomori with absolutely no life, who escapes into a world that is medieval that it enables his problematic traits. For a show to star a main character like this is pretty daring and risky, and is understandably divisive among its audience.

Personally, even if the show gives the main character a very good & tasteful portrayal, it doesn’t change the fact that he’s been a trash human in the past. Also, if Rudy suddenly becomes a saint where he promises never to do crimes again, his motivations come off as deus ex machina.

This has me confused because it sounds like there was a chance where, if Mushoku Tensei portrayed Rudy’s actions tastefully, even its haters today would’ve loved his character even if his problematic premise wasn’t changed at all
