> The purpose of a mask is to hide our true identity. Through wearing one, we attempt to change who we are or to become someone else. In this scene, the girls put a horse head mask on Matsuri in hopes that it will allow her to seem more assertive and intimidating. They find that her true persona shows through. This shows that the effect of masks is limited, because, while they can change us on a surface level, they cannot change what’s underneath.
