**Fae Facts:**
Witches are a very old concept in myth and literature, and for most of history the word was only associated with evil or negative magic. Here they are said to specialize in curses, which might come from the etymology of the word – another Old English word for ‘witch’ was *hægtes* or *hægtesse*, which became the modern English word “hag” and is linked to the word “hex”. In most other Germanic languages, their word for ‘witch’ comes from the same root as these; for example German *Hexe* and Dutch *heks.*
