Despite its massively popular opening episode, people seem to have a lot of criticism for Oshi No Ko (some that are legitimate in my opinion, and some that feel more like “we didn’t like the popular thing so we have to bash it”)…
But the one criticism that straight up baffles me, is (and I’ve seen it A LOT, here or in youtube comments), is people saying [Oshi No Ko Ep1] >!The MC is a horrible person because he wanted to marry Sarina when she turned 16…!<
…What?
Often I feel like anime has way too much exposition, that it always feel the need to tell too much when most people probably understood everything of a scene already… But when I see comments like these, makes me realize that perhaps it is needed, because some people seem to take everything literally and not think a scene through;
[Oshi No Ko Ep1] >!Even Sarina knew she was gonna die before 16. She made it painfully obvious. If she knew, you can be sure as hell the doctor knew; He likely didn’t tell her much about the serious of her condition – to give her hope and all – but despite this, she still figured out she was dying from what she picked up. So the doctor had to be 100% sure she was dying. So… In what world do you think a doctor telling a dying girl that “he’ll marry her when she’s 16”, is a legitimate marriage proposal? I call this “A doctor trying to cheer up a dying girl”. I mean, if he told her “On your 16th birthday I’ll give you a beer”, would people think he was guilty of providing alcoholic drinks to a minor? Sarina clearly liked/loved him, and she brought up the marriage thing and his first reaction was “no, that’d be the end of my career”, and then when she pushed on he said “Sure, when you’re 16”, to cheer her up… Which didn’t do much because she knew she would never be 16, but I’d say it’s a more compassionate answer than I don’t know, “Why would I marry you, you’re gonna die in 2 months, what’s the point?”!<
Well, this was a bit of a rant, but I think it may also help provide some context that some may have missed, to get a better understanding of the character, as the show goes on…
I understand that there may be some genuine/legitimate criticism of the MC (like the stuff with AI), but this one 100% results from a huge misunderstanding of the scene in my opinion, so I thought it was a little silly to see so many people take the scene that way!
