What is the exact source of Anime warriors wrapping in bandages their weapon?

I noticed long ago that whenever warriors with huge weapon enters a town or city he always has his weapon wrapped in bandages or other types of cloths. For example, it can be seen in Demon Slayer (Tengen), Mushoku Tesnei (Rudeus&Ruijerd), Gate (Rory) etc. What makes sense, entering the town with an unsecured weapon can be against the rules and get the attention of the guard. Wrapping in bandages is equal to keeping your sword in scabbard, and ofc it also keeps the pointy thing safer to surroundings.

[Btw bandages often magically are cut when the fight is starting. ](https://preview.redd.it/g43sy5p4q6za1.png?width=1224&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=81bf9b5752f42994f26671959f49b144890bdd52)

However, I’m really curious what is exactly a source of that. Is this straightly an Anime thing or maybe it’s coming from Japanese culture and history? I don’t really recognize western Fantasy using this trope. Do you know maybe what was the first Anime/production which maybe started this trope?
