To preface, this isn’t meant to be a hate thread even if it might devolve into one. I was not raised Hindu or Buddhist or any other religion that incorporates Reincarnation as a religious concept. To me, reincarnation is an asinine concept that triggers a clear disgust reaction inside. To be clear, I’ve never thrown up from watching anime but reincarnation shows have taken me farther than any other. I can’t be the only person who has this sort of reaction so my question is if you are a fan of shows of this genre, like slime, mushoku tensei, oshi no ko, etc. do you follow or were raised in a hindu/buddhist environment? I’m wondering if that is the reason why these shows are SO polarizing where you have one faction of people who love them to the point they will defend it’s honor like it was their family and another faction who absolutely abhor it as if it personally insulted them?(for evidence one can simply look up discussion posts of these shows on this subreddit to see said polarization) Admittedly, I obviously lean towards the latter rather than the former but nevertheless realize this a topical topic that merits further investigation rather than a simple dismissal given how heavy natured it can be. If you care to share any nuanced thoughts on this matter I would love to hear them.
Edit: I think an interesting take on the reincarnation genre would be if there was a universe where reincarnation was the norm and every baby born had the personality and memories of their old life and it explored the effects this would have on the society of this alternate reality and its future. That would be a compelling show that I would definitely want to watch.
