The main character Yamada begins high school with a goal: sleep with a hundred guys. But to reach 100 she needs to start with one, and that’s where our story begins. Yamada herself is beautiful and easily attracts guys so it seems like an easy target to reach, but she’s also bratty, vain, shallow, and overly confident; the contrast of her personality with her subsequent actions is where most of the comedy that drives the series comes from. She’s the kind of person I would hate to be around.
While I understand that it’s the combination of traits that makes the series what it is, I would enjoy the show a lot more if Yamada wasn’t *also* a tsundere dumbass who gets cold feet when attempting to enact every plan she makes. She’s the queen of sending mixed signals and then becoming upset when the guy’s confused and can’t read her mind to do exactly what she wants. This is on top of not comprehending/acknowledging when she’s the one screwing things up, which ends up being more frustrating than funny. At least that’s not usually openly directed toward the guy (Kosuda) because it’s her own fault and she sometimes has enough self-awareness to realize as much. I lost count of how many times I shouted a variation of “*What the fuck are you doing?*” at her in my TV, which at least a sign that I’m invested in the show even if it’s one that makes me facepalm multiple times an episode.
All that said, I can’t actually hate the show because it’s executed pretty well overall. The other characters are fairly basic but well-defined and immediately memorable, many with notable roles to fill opposite Yamada. The show is at its best when Yamada’s foil isn’t herself but rather the rest of the cast and there are a few different opportunities for that through the course of the series. The comedic timing is on point and jokes are never far away, and while they largely remain focused on the same topics they never really felt stale by the end. It shakes things up a little with some slow development amid the typical high school events and ultimately does go *somewhere* which is more than I can say about a number of other “romance” anime.
I’m generally not a fan of ecchi so it’s one reason why I’ve avoided this show for years but all things considered, for the subject matter I think it’s relatively tame for most of the series. There’s plenty of *fully clothed* jiggling but anything beyond that is generally intentional on Yamada’s part and intended for Kosuda as much as the viewer which is the kind of thing I’m fine with. [The final couple of episodes in particular] >!cranked up the sexual tension to what I expected the series to mostly be from the start before it stalled!< and left me with a much better final impression of the series overall.
Overall I’ll have to give it a 7/10 because I had a lot of fun watching despite how frustrating it was at times.
